An extravaganza of fashion mesmerized the audience at club 23 Crown Towers Sunday February 10th as part of the three week Midsumma Festival. The runway show captivated the plentiful crowd who were eager to celebrate creative diversity. We recognized the celebratory spirit at the event in regard to the recent “yes” vote.
The individual designers showcased their intrinsically different approaches some street wear others evening gowns, couture, special event, and bridal. Elements of the show were glamorous others were traditionally inspired. Also present were artistically designed prototypes with a less conventional slant. There was something in the show for everyone to appreciate.
“ERNEST FASHIONS” in the latter ilk, the opening piece a floating icy toned imagining textured with subtle hued tiling, the design accentuating the model’s long beautiful limbs. Carefully collected up translucent material was fashioned into a new play on a shape like the bustle from yesteryear; this 21st century vision opened the night. Exciting examples paraded the runway with a superb juxtaposition of softness and cloud-like white fabric with edgy additions producing an avant-garde feel.

“ORNE TRENDZ BY PRERNA KHANNA” The first selection for this designer was the blackest velvet top contrasting texturally with a captivating metallic fine linear textured long skirt and silver buckled black belt. The skirt beautifully played with the camera flashes of light in the room. Blues and pastels predominated in the other long evening gowns they had subtle touches of shimmer and the material draped softly. Finishing this set were two stunning white bridal gowns that filled the width of the runway spectacularly with a tulle joy.
“ERRICK KIM” Errick explored black and white fabrics; a preoccupation with Yin and Yang on an epic artistic level! The black was strongly relatable to Melbournians because we have a love affair with black. His initial runway ensemble had references to Steam-Punk, it was a beautifully crafted introductory example. His white gowns had an ethereal quality the vision lingering in your mind long after you see each of them. Errick has a fascination with his French ancestry and with Royalty. This is reflected in his final gown on the runway; his personal favorite a Couture Gown (awarded Gown of the year) a special black velvet wonder with inklings of a spectacularly Gothic feel.
“POLAK” Edgy fashion casual appeal some pieces with long profile shapes particularly accentuated in knits with long sleeves. Fun clothing having unique twists in its individualistic fashion slant. There was a fun appealing knit dress in red, white and pale apricot casual and looking soft and comfortable.
“KWACHA” Bursting with colour this brand debuted their collection in the show with a Capri blue eye-catching flamenco inspired mermaid/coral creation. Wonderful happy colours inspired by various influences with tribal pattern featuring strongly. A Male model wore a gold and orange tunic style top teamed with jeans a relaxed stylish pairing. There was a wonderful juxtaposition in coupling unexpected elements in the outfits. This set finished with a figure hugging shining gown of gold. The envy of any Egyptian goddess this radiated style and pizazz. The thigh high split sexy design featured geometric patterning which accentuated contours of the body. The eye was drawn to a circular motif at midriff. The back of the gown was interestingly finished with a soft flowing bow-like addition; a beautiful attention to detail.
“INTRENDZ FASHION” Floor length full sweeping long skirts some made a grand entrance with elegant formal fashioned tops. A delightful umbrella print skirt with accompanying motif on the top was accented with embellishments. One side sleeveless on this design, the other sheer and delicately beaded. The detail on the opposing side to the sleeve on the bodice gave a satisfying balance. There was much to delight with a textures; a hot pink feathered ensemble for example! There were fashion options here bright or neutral separates mix or match.
“VEZZANO COUTURE” Highlighting femininity this brand graced the runway with a stunning bridal gown with delicate sheerness and floral intricateness. In a whisper of pink this gown celebrated the body defining it softly and captivatingly crafted in the highly sought after 3D lace. There was a superb attention to detail in the floral inspired sheer gloves and elegant beautiful tulle train. Victoria offers an extensive repertoire of options and delights in achieving a perfect synthesis between client and design. The whole process is Victoria from design, pattern and crafting.
“HARLOW LOVES DAISY” models burst onto the runway with verve and strutting a winning confident look. Fresh, dazzling, alluring was the fashion feel featuring Jewelry from LEELI DESIGN. A sense of completeness was seen in the showcase with a great marrying of the clothing and jewelry brand. The mood was fresh young and exciting; beautifully embellished Kimonos, silk embroidered lounge pants and an also the essence of the bohemian bride. There were glamorously indulgent fabrics, stunning jewelry and headpieces.
“ATONG OMOLI” With soft casual fabrics and an appealing relaxed feel there were versatile day to evening looks on the separates. Draping skirts with tops showing bare midriff in warm tropical shades choice of warm pink or tangerine in the sets. This label showcased a variety of looks from casual to day/office wear. A funky three quarter soft silky pale mushroom toned pants and darker toned top worn with a colour block long-line jacket in pink and aqua appealed in top created a wonderful design discord.
LAUDER TAYLOR MILLINERY Hats to suit the glitterati amongst us to the more conservative; there’s a design to appeal. Amongst the selection was an eye-catching white art piece. This label encapsulates style and innovation. Clients are catered who have a penchant for the unique.
MPIRE Q Man oh man yes some male talent on the runway in racy red. Muscles and bare chests predominate plenty for the person who wants to be noticed. Visual impact with brilliant cadmium red oversized cartoon-like sleeveless jacket with huge lapels and buttons teamed with satin finish white pants. Then a darker alizarin red and white plastic long line coat with zippered fly, pvc bright red pants. Oral fixation fetish mouth ring accessory added an element of drama and the unexpected to the look the model attired in a zip fronted long red gown. The mouthpiece had pearl chains to secure in place behind the ears. A collection designed to entice and excite those who dare. Those who don’t are left wondering out in the cold!

ARON KATONA Models were radiant with beaming smiles in Aron’s designs. Witnessing this must have been bliss for the creator. Each gown was made with careful consideration and like a sports car hugged their curves, these gowns were going places. Echoes of Art Deco geometry were in some of the shimmery patterning cleverly in harmony with a modernity of styling. Immersed in glamour models emerged and having been touched by the light of the phoenix were made more powerfully splendiferousness. Glamour with meaning.
