Interview with Julie Nelson / Aromatique Essentials
by NM
We connect you with the best talents, celebrities and businesses in the world.
Our recommendation is based on our own best experiences.
Happy reading!
I am meeting today with one of the best Australian holistic aromatherapists, Julie Nelson, a creator of famous Aromatique Essentials and She Makes Scents companies. Julie has got not only natural intuitive knowledge about the perfumes that she creates and that will turn to be as individual as your finger prints, she also has a deep scientific knowledge in the subject of aromas. Julie's more than 20 years experience tells her exactly where to look for answers: inside yourself, and right in your core being, your soul. That is why her products are of the highest quality you can find on the market today. They are designed as your unique and personal signature. Said that, this story would be incomplete without mentioning that Julie is using only Botanical (organic where possible) ingredients.

Introduction.

Dear Julie, thank you for your time today. First time I saw your page on line I truly believed it was something very special, it was not some ordinary beauty page. Please tell us a little bit about yourself...
Q1. How the idea of creating aromatherapy blends came up to you the first time?

JN: In 1988 My beautiful daughter was born with a life threatening illness and 6 months later diagnosed with a 2nd life threatening condition. As a Mother I felt so helpless I wanted to do so much more to support my girl and voila, to cut a long story short I discovered essential oils and the power of scent. I was hooked and was on a mission to study Aromatherapy and get my Diploma.

Q2. I heard that we, humans remember the smells from many years ago and can easily re-live the moments that were associated with this particular smell... Do you believe that sense of smell is the strongest out of all we have?

JN: This is absolutely correct! It is our most powerful sense and to answer your question here is my favourite quote by Helen Keller ~ Smell is the potent wizard that transports you across the miles and all the years we have lived…

Q3. Julie there are so many varieties of different scents on the market. Why organic and natural? Why are you attracted to these articular types of scents?

JN: Many if not all of the commercial perfumes and fragrances available are made up of synthesised (man made) chemicals and alcohol. Most of these synthetic ingredients are known to be (and scientifically proven) to be neurotoxins, cause headaches, migraines and anxiety. There is much controversy over this as many commercial perfumers (from design houses) claim that some of the synthetic ingredients are more beneficial to ones health. This is a huge subject and really needs to be a standalone subject of discussion. I place them into 3 categories to help one understand the difference between them all.

1. Perfume houses and designer/celebrity fragrances are made up of essential oils, synthesised chemicals and alcohol. Be very cautious with cheap commercial perfumes. Research has found them to be associated to hormonal disruption especially in young teenagers, and the above mentioned.
2. Natural with synthetic and alcohol. I am not sure how a perfume can be classified as 'Natural" when it contains up to 2 synthesised ingredients to stretch the aroma? But that is what it is..
3. Botanical meaning they ONLY contain plant extracts and true essential oils derived from plant matter.

You can find out more here: MY BLOG
Q4. Can aromatherapy really heal people or is it just another invention of alternative approaches to our health some people are very doubtful about? Do you believe that perfumes enhance our lives?

JN: Essential oils consist 100’s of chemical’s that give them their therapeutic properties and smell. They are best used as a preventative for many common conditions such as period pain, colds and they are excellent for treating many skin conditions and psychological and emotional conditions. They help to reduce pain and inflammation, promote blood circulation, boost your immune, strengthen your nervous system and the list goes on. Of course there are specific essential oils for different conditions. Please seek the advice of a fully qualified Aromatherapist holding a Diploma or at least a Cert.4 in Aromatherapy.

Q5. Do you also run classes in Aromatherapy?

JN: Absolutely, I run Artisan Perfume workshops where the attendees design and create their own Signature Scent with my guidance and the other option is that together we design and create their custom perfume. I am also going to be running some half day workshops for people to make Aromatique gifts like bath oils, body oils and room sprays for the 2nd half of 2015 along with some pamper days and afew other exciting things are coming.

Q6. What are your favourite aromas (if this question is not too personal)? Is there such thing as the most powerful aroma or the aroma with the most powerful aura?

JN: Many!!! Good grief how to narrow this one down..lol. I love florals like Jasmine, Neroli, Rose, Ylang Ylang they are very sexy and sensual. Patchouli, Vetiver and Oakmoss because they are rich with a mysterious energy, I love all of the spices and fruity oils. I also have some rare and very gorgeous exotique essential oils and botanical extracts like Peach, Cacao, Champa, Amber Sweetie. The list goes on.

Q7. What do you find challenging in your work and what do you enjoy the most?

JN:Admin! I would be happy to create divine Aromatique scents and formula’s all day and I love consulting and teaching which I have spent many years doing.

Q8. Can you recall the most interesting moment in your practice (something unusual, sensational you found in your field etc)?

JN: Simply… the power of essential oils and the power of smell. It never ceases to amaze me. The transformation that occurs and it can be instant!

Q9. What inspires you the most in your work?

JN: What inspires me the most is when I see the healing power of essential oils and other botanical extracts do their magic and help people transform on all levels, emotionally, psychologically, physically, spiritually and energetically. When I see a person smile after inhaling or applying their Aromatique product I can not help but smile. It is so rewarding!

Q10. Where can our readers purchase your products?

JN: I have an online boutique so follow this link ~ SHOP and I am always happy to answer any questions people may have
Q11. If not aromatherapy what else would you do?

JN: To be honest, I will continue this until I no longer am able to physically do it and being creative and helping others is a part of my work…Actually It isn't work, it is a lifestyle.

Q12. What are the ways you market your products (magazines, online blogs, set up shop)?

JN: All of the above, face to face, events, social media, word of mouth.

Q13. What talent would you most like to have apart from the ones that you already have/achieved?

JN: Hmmm…I really do need to improve my technical skills for online.

Q14. I also noticed on your website that you run dancing classes together with the aromatherapy classes. What is the connection there? What is Nia?

JN: Arhhh this is in collaboration with a gorgeous woman Viktoria Dohandi. Vik is a NIA teacher in Sydney. NIA is a fusion of dance, belly dancing, tai chi and more. It is designed to help you connect with your essence, feeling and using all of your senses. The first part of the day we focus on NIA where there are specific movements you learn and also to dance freely, then meditation for the chakras and last but not least attendees create their own signature perfume.

Q15. Is there something that you are still learning?

JN: Yes! I never want to stop learning whatever it is I need and want to learn.
She Makes Scents Luxury Artisan Perfumes

Q16. What or who is the greatest love of your life?

JN: My beautiful daughter! She is my greatest love, my greatest gift and my greatest teacher. And my darling 4 leggeds who are so healing.

Q17. What would be the first thing you do if you win the jack pot lottery or own a large sum of money?

JN: I have a few missions in my life to achieve. One of my biggest is to have a charity ball to raise money for TOF children. For the first one I want to raise $250,000. I have long had a dream to set up a beautiful botanical perfume bar.

Q18. Which five words would your friends use to describe you?

JN: Kind, generous, sensitive, maybe a little crazy..lol and passionate

Q19. What would you like to be doing in 2-3 years from now?

JN: Continue to help people improve their health and wellbeing through the power of scent, travel and I would love to have my perfume bar open for people to come and have their personalised perfumes made.

Q20. If you had one wish…

JN: To be able to continue my work to be able to help as many people as I possibly can whilst living my life fully and completely.

Q21. What questions you are never asked in the interviews but you would really like to answer. If you have such question can you please answer it...

JN: Most of the time I am asked about what aromatherapy is, how to use it etc, etc. I would like to share my why. In 1988 my life completely changed. I gave birth to my beautiful daughter (2 months early). She was born with a congenital life threatening illness and six months later she was diagnosed with a second life threatening condition. As I stood by her time and time again I felt so helpless as a mother. I wanted to give my darling girl every chance possible to live and experience life. It was then that I made the decision to eliminate all synthetic and toxic chemicals from our environment. I soon after discovered essential oils. When out one day I came across this new age shop and I started smelling all of the fragrant oils. I had no idea that they were actually botanical extracts. They pulled me in with my first sniff and I fell in love with them! My first 3 essential oils I bought were Bergamot, Geranium and Patchouli. I bathed in them, I used them in the burner and made body oils to apply. I was totally hooked and that was the beginning of my journey into the amazing and very magickal world of natural scents. I have long been on a mission to support and educate as many people as I can reach the world over on the power of scent and the use of pure essential oils. And what better way to do it than through our most powerful sense…Our sense of smell. I hold a Diploma in Aromatherapy and have a very diverse background from being an aromatherapy lecturer  in Sydney for almost 13 years, working with dementia, chronic lung disease, women’s issues, psychological and emotional condition and my focus is on natural health and wellbeing through the power of scent.

I am finishing this interview with a strong feeling: "what a graceful soul! and how much we learn from each other... and how much there is to learn... "

feedback from Julie Dargan, The Juice Master Australia owner
At last a perfume that is pure and powerful.

Aromatique Essentials is an Australian based company that gives the personal touch rarely seen in today’s synthetic world. Julie is the creator of Aromatique Essentials and I was blown away by the ethos of her company.

What many people do not realise, is that fragrances from essential oils only have therapeutic properties when true essential oils are used. Most, if not all, fragrances are made with synthetic blends. For example, lavender is a calming essential oil, but when it is a synthetic blend, you smell the lavender but it does not relax you at a cellular level. For me, when I purchase something with essential oils I want the therapeutic benefits more so than the fragrance so Aromatique Essentials was a real winner for me.

The oils come in a base of organic cold pressed jojoba which allows the perfume to feel sensuous when applied to the skin. No nasty chemicals and I felt invigorated for the day.

Thank you Julie for creating such a wonderful, natural blend. In a society where “natural” seems to be applied to most things, it is wonderful to find something truly natural for me to apply to my body. No more nasty chemical perfumes for me!

feedback from Jurga Celikeine, the make-up artist and hair stylist from Melbourne Theatre Company

This perfumed oil has a very soft and sweet smell with floral undertones. It doesn't leave a sharp feeling in the nose like some essential oils. I know a lot of people who are allergic or sensitive to artificial scents or perfumes, so this product is appreciated.

feedback from Elena Metlenko, massage therapist

I recently tried Aromatique Essentials sample called Luthian, which is a full body floral scent with warmth and sensuality. I run my own business as a Massage Pamper Therapist and use a range of essential oils to both create a relaxing mood as well as physically soothe sore, tired muscles. The sense of smell is only one of the senses I evoke with my massages. It is therefore crucial that I allow each client to first have a smell of what I plan to use, so that they can be assured of a wholly pleasant & appealing sensory experience. Obviously, one's sense of smell can be very different to another's, which is why it's important to offer a wide range of products. The critical factor is to ensure clients are offered certified pure essential oils, not simply fragrant synthetic oils. Aromatique offers this & more in an exciting & sensual range of skincare products, body oils, lip balms, perfumes as well as consultations & life styling. If you're looking for a way to awaken your sensuality, take a look at Aromatique!
