MELBOURNE REGATTA 2016
Melbourne Regatta & The Blessing of the Fleets
By Bryanna Reynolds
It was a beautiful day and the weather could not have been any better for the occasion. The sun was shining and there was not a cloud in the sky.
As we arrived at Melbourne Docklands we saw the luxury boat we were going to be spending the afternoon aboard.
There were so many people of all ages, lining up to climb aboard the majestic 'Lady Cutler'. Whilst we lined up the captain of the boat could be seen ahead welcoming all the passengers on board. It was one of the greatest boat experiences i have ever been involved.
We walked the plank to walk through the gorgeous inside of the 'Lady Cutler' and were surprised at the amount of food and beverages available, it was quite the treat.
The captain made an announcement that we were to leave the dock soon and join the other boats, ships and vessels in the bay just around the corner in the Docklands.
We went for a short ride and joined around 20 other vessels in the neighbouring harbour.
The reason we were all gathered was for the Annual Melbourne Regatta and blessing of the fleet.
I have never been to one before and it was absolutely fabulous to be involved.
As all the boats rested in the bay we could hear and watch the performances on land. There was singing, acting, dancing and even a marching band throughout the 2 hours.
The later it got the more boats that arrived. Before we knew it we were treated to a rendition of Auld Lang Syne which was so beautiful.
Then we were escorted out of the bay by the rescue boat through archways of water being spurted into the air.
The sound of all the vessels beeping at one another was just so joyous.
We went for a little ride out of the bay under the Bolte Bridge and all the way back to our starting point.
I would highly recommend this experience to anyone who loves being a part of Melbourne culture and simply celebrating all there is around you.
Along the way i met so many lovely people aboard and it was inspiring hearing their stories about the previous years regatta events.
If you get the chance to be involved next year i would recommend getting a ticket about the 'Lady Cutler' and truly emerging yourself in the blessing of the fleets experience.
Thank you to our captain for a beautiful ride around the docklands and to all the fellow sailors we met on the day. I am looking forward to next years regatta.
