SHERYL MAY
Born in Gisborne, a remote, east coast beach town in New Zealand, from an early age Sheryl was influenced not only by the wild beauty of the surrounding nature, but also within the nurturing environment of a craft oriented family. Her Dad being a Potter and her Mum a made to measure Seamstress. Sheryl also spent an impressionable year as an exchange student in Spain, where she was able to pursue both her love for fashion and dance. An insatiable desire to create, led her to study Fashion Design at Massey University in Wellington. This was followed by an internship firstly in Spain at a Barcelona Fashion Prediction Company, then on to London where she spent 5 years honing her skills, working for design duo Idol.
In 2000 Sheryl May founded her label in Brixton London, where from her kitchen table she hand printed, and beaded pieces which sold through local boutiques. More stockists followed and with them an invitation to show at the London Fashion Week exhibition. Women from all over Europe, Japan, the US and the Middle East were able to add pieces from her collections to their wardrobes.
In 2008, Sheryl made a life changing decision and established a design studio back in her home town and continues to work between there and London. Producing 2 main collections a year, Sheryl also works in differing capacities with a diverse range of clients such as Burberry, H&M, Gap and M&S
Covid has seen a different rhythm of life ensue, and a refocus on the local market and its needs. In 2020 she collaborated with NZ company Subs based in Korea, to produce a 100% recycled flip flop with an eponomous print from the Summer collection. A strong desire to create useful, beautiful and sustainable designer pieces prevails.
