CHAM SANTOS
Designer Profile:
That wonder seeker flair or call it her innate gypsy side of style follower Charmaine ‘Cham’ Santos has paved the way to follow her pursuit of fashion.
As a free-spirited teen who was once admittedly obsessed with boho chic craze became more curious of how fashion can affect and change the mindset of any person.
At a tender age of 16, she has always believed that being well-dressed is a form of manner and expression. Her initial aim was to do styling jobs that will enable her to experiment and create a distinct image.
With that, she admits that she has always been amazed with the glitter of Hollywood style glitz and that has inspired even her more. That gradually added fuel to her genuine interest in fashion.
This has pushed Cham to explore and learn more on her chosen field plus the fact that she was practically raised in a family that capitalized style into a thriving biz.
But she has discovered that more than being a stylist, her real calling was to be a designer.
Cham had her formal studies of design at College of Saint Benilde Art School. Besides the visual part of the design, what has drawn her eventually into it were the aesthetics and technicalities interwoven in every aspect of a clothing.
From the structure, to the texture, color coordinating and craftsmanship involved in creating a masterpiece has made her love fashion even more. She also gives gratitude to her designer teachers that didn’t get tired of training her the basics, instilling the ‘be who you are’ mindset and never copy anyone’s design while teaching the proper style aspects in every step of the way. During this learning process, a streak of well-defined confidence has emerged in Cham’s system that goes very well with her style instinct which later motivated her to create her own label.
All that she has learned in and out of the class while having hands-on training with their family’s garments biz, Cham summed it all and started her very own ready-to-wear (RTW) line, Black Velvet.
“I love colors, textures and prints. I always start my design ideas with that, and it flows freely. I’m happy that I can do that with what I’m passionate about and the designs that I love.”
Cham rightfully knew that the learning does not stop there. She is geared up to every challenge and is welcoming short pitstops in her style journey. Now, she has stepped up her game and is finally joining the ASEAN Fashion Designers Showcase. Through this noteworthy endeavor, Cham is aiming to break out to amplify her brand’s network as well as reach. Likewise, it will be another feat of success soon to be added in her brand’s portfolio.
“I’m looking forward to my brand’s expansion and at the same time be acknowledged to other Asian countries. I know this show is the right avenue to make progress. You see majority of my fellow designers have gone the ready-to-wear route and my only motivation is for my brand to stand out.”
BRAND PROFILE:
Black Velvet speaks of trend meets practicality.
In keeping up with the global trends and changing style behavior, Cham Santos conceptualized and created Black Velvet in 2015.
A ready-to-wear brand that gives fashion freedom to modern women through the distinctly made clothes perfectly suited for their every style needs.
Cham has always envisioned the brand to compete against the foreign counterparts and at the same time highlight the best aspect of Filipina’s body through clothes that defines subtly sexy mode but very wearable on every occasion that they head to.
The label is currently housed in 20 branches of the big named retail department stores all around the Philippines making it accessible to their clients.

Being a grandson of a community dressmaker and having relatives who are in the garments industry, John Robert Dela Serna of Erjohn Dela Serna House of Designs once dreamt of having his name and designs being worn while at the same time promoting his Cordilleran roots.
A tour de force of the fashion design industry of Nueva Ecija (Philippines), he is starting to be known for his passion and ingenious attempt to marry his signature aesthetics of texture, modern, edgy and asymmetrical designs with the use of indigenous woven fabrics from the Cordilleras (northern mountain region of the Philippines).
This bold move to introduce to the modern society the products of his roots, the local weaving communities, was not left unnoticed by the press, which won him entry to the wider arena of fashion design in the Philippines and eventually earning his spot in one of the coveted fashion design organizations in the country: the Designers Circle Philippines.
His collaboration with an international brand has indeed jumpstarted his career as in 2017, his House of Designs made noise in a New York show and also got the chance to dress up International Candidates for International Pageants, a feat he still considers his biggest break to date.
Erjohn indeed has come a long way from his humble beginning when he started his fashion design journey back in 2016. He remembers that he financed his design school expenses from his income from small design gigs. Currently, his fashion design house employs full time staff and a small squad of trusted sewers.
From a clientele of mostly friends, Erjohn Dela Serna House of Designs now caters a wide range of clients and projects like pageants, corporate, social and wedding events. He was also able to dress up personalities like Catriona Gray (Miss Universe 2018), Athisa Manalo (Miss International 2018 1st Runner Up), Angelia Ong (Miss Earth 2015), and Venus Raj (Miss Universe 2010 4th Runner Up) to name a few.
Right now, other than the Igorot and the Cordilleran weaves, his designs have expanded to include other woven fabrics that are indigenous to the Philippines such as the T’nalak of South Cotabato, the Inab’l of Ilocos and the Hablon of Iloilo. With passion and attention to detail, his designs and garments are carefully studied and made to suit your taste. No two works are identical but his identity as a creator translates to his works.
Despite these many accomplishments, he still stays within his vision for his designs that is for them to continue having relevance and style even after five or ten years have passed.
Indeed, his keen attention to detail and his vision for the local textile industry has made him arrive to what acknowledgments he enjoys today. As what one of his mentors used to say, “His eye for prints allows him to deconstruct, at the same time, convert a piece that transcends time and place.”

PAT SANTOS
It is rare to find some one who possesses a great knack for business and a creative mind. But all these and more can be found in one persona.
Fashion Designer Patrick ‘Pat’ Santos has built his reputation and established his own style niche banking on these two characteristics. Thus, making Pat an achiever on both fields—business and fashion. Ever since he was a child, he dreamt of creating bridal and couture line of his own. He started realizing his passion for designing at a tender age of 17. After two years of Economics and Accounting course in college, Pat then shifted to a more appropriate course that will nurture his love for styles through Fashion Design and Advanced Pattern Making.
Right after college, he went on to pursue his dream of designing. Although his first love for couture and bridal line was put to a momentary hold because of a change in market trends, he got in touch with his business savvy skills by supplying and manufacturing ready-to-wear clothes to a big chain of department stores in the Philippines.
Hard work and tough experiences paid off as Pat was focused to achieve his vision of becoming victorious in all his endeavors. His journey to creating his own label wasn’t exactly a walk in the park type. But thankfully, he trusted his knowledge on business and his style expertise that
paved the way to higher grounds. With that, he has proved to be one of the reliable designersuppliers in the garment industry.
In 1991, he was given the biggest break of his RTW supplier-manufacturer career when Pat’s first production of basic shirts in soft fabrics sold out in just two days on the racks. Right there and then, he was given an opportunity to branch out and create something ingenious for Filipino women.
As he established himself as a supplier and business partner of the biggest mall in the Philippines, Pat felt the need to finally start on his own label. After years of knowing the Filipina market and what style is more appealing to the majority. He started building his first brand foray.
In 2003, Woman Philosophy came to life offering Filipino women modern classic RTW pieces that can be wearable in and out their work places. Pat created a line that exudes trendiness and well-made that are reasonably priced.
Moving forward to another RTW biz was his creation of Blanc Et Noir in 2009 that broke the usual dressing norm among the Filipinas. The brand offered trendier garments that speaks of sophistication and style.
In keeping up with the global trends and changing style behavior, he conceptualized and created Black Velvet in 2016. Pat envisioned the brand to compete against the foreign counterparts and at the same time highlight the best aspect of Filipina’s body through clothes that are sexy but very wearable as trend meets practicality.
Pat Santos, The Bridal Couturier Having established himself and building a strong foundation for two decades in the garment industry, Pat decided to continue pursuing his first love, Couture and Bridal Line in 2012.
With his growth as a fashion designer and the mastery of craftsmanship that he acquired over the span of years in the industry and his fondness in his travels abroad, Pat reiterates the top of mind factor incorporated in every bridal gown that he creates.
Aesthetic is the main consideration that he teaches the bride right on their first meeting.
Envisioning the best gown that will fit the bride at the same time sticking with the golden rule of comfort and wearability. As a bridal fashion designer, Pat has already tucked numerous achievements under his belt. He has also showcased his bridal masterpieces through fashion shows in the Philippines and New York USA. He has also become a favorite of celebrities, socialites and beauty queens who has a flair for his gowns and formal wear.
Pat has joined the ASEAN Fashion Designers Showcase to enhance his creativity and business sense. He hopes that through this affiliation, Pat would be able to highlight his creations and broaden his aesthetic aspect in a global scale.
Pat Santos, The Future The brand maker that is Pat Santos hopes to create more glittery pieces n the future. Breaking new grounds and reaching to the next highest level motivates him on a daily basis.
The learnings doesn’t stop there. Pat would want to gain more knowledge and enhance his artistic side more. In a few years, Pat wants to break through his dedicated brands as well as well-crafted designs in a compelling world or maybe around the globe.

JOANNA LIM
Interviews questions for IDFW designers
Brand : Joannalsm
Designer : Joanna Lim
Tell me a bit about your brand?
A Story in every collection.
JOANNALSM is a rising couture fashion brand by Joanna Lim, a Singapore-based designer. In a world consumed by mass production, JOANNALSM hopes to break the mould by being a house of custom, avant-garde looks. Furthermore these looks seek to embody the distinct style of every wearer. In each collection, witness the fusion of art and fashion which is constantly challenging the norms of texture, technique and form.
INTERPRETATION . INNOVATION . IDENTITY
We aim to push the label’s boundaries whilst staying retrospective - always seeking that inner identity, a call from within to be different yet true to oneself. We are constantly taking inspirations from every little thing that surrounds us, deconstructing and reinterpreting it based on our own definitions, and therefore rewriting the story that best fits. With every handmade piece, JOANNALSM encapsulates a story; one that is only and fully yours.
What’s the story behind this collection? Who/ what inspired it?
This mini video series consists of a mixture of 2 collections - Layered Imprint & Oriental Punch The video started off with a oriental series shot at Gardens By the Bay - a fusion of traditional garment detailings and modernised silhouettes complemented with feminine floral prints. The silhouettes in this collection adds lightness to the sophisticatedly-coloured and printed outfits. Fabrics used were light yet structural enough to highlight the shape of a woman’s figure. Prints are inspired by a combination of Juniper trees & berries and one of the twelve symbols of sovereignty as appeared on the five-clawed dragon robes of a Chinese imperial authority figure — seaweed. The hand drawn print represents the youth or evergreen and purity, which is a noble symbol of the emperor’s leadership.
_______
The video further extended to the 2nd collection which was shot at The Pinnacle at Duxton - Layered Imprint is a ready-to-wear collection that focuses on the keyword - “identity”. Textile manipulation such as laser cutting techniques and hand sewn techniques were used to create a crafty yet edgy style that is later on completed with a series of digital prints and crystal embellishments. Like your own identity, the specific placement of crystals were meant to create the DNA molecule while the hand sewn thread acts as the bond between each atom. The collection features a balance between what’s new and old. There is a style of playfulness (sport chic) as depicted by the colours in contrast to black and white. Fabric has been carefully selected with soft and structured fabrics, sheer and opaque fabrics chosen specifically to complement one another.
_______
We have also included a series of face mask collections that was created to give wearers matching masks to complete their outfit for a day out.
What role do you think social media plays in fashion today?
A form of connection and communication. Many fashion brands use social media for advertising and to engage their target market or potential customers. The saying “Picture (videography as well) speaks a thousand word”, stands true. Images help to capture one attention - either a form
of disgust, pleasure, inspiration, rage etc. But it definitely connects everybody around the world. We do not necessarily need to speak each other's languages because images are able to do so at a speed of light - they are in fact the world’s most powerful common communication tool. Social media provides valuable and shareable information and these can be easily conveyed.

DESINGER’S PROFILE:
At a young age, Joanna found her passion in Gymnastics. With every routine having to be precise and executed within a specific time frame, its inculcated perseverance and sheer determination to perform every move with perfection. The blends of flexibility, rhythmic movement and power has led her to cultivate disciplinary habits whilst finding ways to express herself through movement. Despite going through arduous training and pressure, her love for the sport has become a part of who she is as an individual and ultimately shaped her to who she is today.
Drawing parallels to Gymnastics, Joanna believes that fashion is a captivating subject and is about expressing your identity. Her aesthetics aim to reinterpret a concept and recreate the work through her creative mind and eye. Understanding how the body functions and what it is capable of, gives Joanna the idea of how clothes can be interpreted and designed.
Translating what was once flat to a three-dimensional one, “after-all, the body does come in various shapes and sizes and not just a thin sheet of paper.” As a textile designer, “I want to bring prints and textile manipulations as a form of a messenger between the wearer and viewer. I believe that I can turn art and facts into something more definable and wearable.”
Joanna aims to design and construct clothing to tell her audience a story through visuals, which in this case, through the garments. The cuts, colours and fabric choice are elements of the storyline. And the outfit functions as a character – the wearer’s identification.
Joanna’s believes in - Interpretation. Innovation. Identity.

The mirrored N in the JOANNALSM logo represents the challenge that Lim has set herself: to push the label’s boundaries ever further whilst staying retrospective — always seeking an inner identity, a call from within to be different and true to oneself.
With every handmade piece, the label aims to encapsulate a story; one that is only and fully yours. JOANNALSM label started in the heart of Singapore’s Lasalle College of the Arts in 2017 by Joanna Lim for a graduate collection. Back then, Joannalsm launched 3 collections, Yuan,
Basadung and Layered Imprint, all odes to the designers’ interpretation of different societal aspects.
The label has collaborated with both local and overseas artists, feeding off each other’s artistic vision with the collective goal to create something harmonious in fashion. In 2018, Joanna worked with local designer Esther Choy, from Esh by Esther, and created Nomad City. A collection aiming to capture the essence of what it means to be an on-the-go modern woman in a bustling metropolitan city.
In late 2019, Ashley Thio, a Business Developer, joined the label with goals to take the brand to further heights. Together the duo run JOANNALSM and have gone full-fledged into business.
In 2020, the label launched their first festive line in honor of the Lunar New Year and produced Oriental Punch, a modern take on a historical holiday. Joanna is an esteem member and fashion ambassador of the ASEAN Fashion Designers Showcase representing Singapore.

Innovation. Identity.
BRAND PROFILE:
JOANNALSM is a rising couture fashion brand by Singapore-based designer Joanna Lim. In a world of mass production, JOANNALSM is a house of custom bespoke looks that seek to embody the distinct style of every wearer. Fashion and art fuse together in collections that challenge the norms of texture, technique, and form.
