OZ ComicCon 2019
Channing Tatum once said “Everyone's a nerd inside. I don't care how cool you are.” and after experiencing Oz Comic-Con 2019, I think he may have been on to something. The tri annual pop culture festival was at its height this year, boasting a ridiculous number of panels, exhibitions and more merchandise than you can shake a stick at. In a world so often divided by opinion on anything and everything, the powers behind Comic-Con have found a way to ensure no one feels left out or excluded, include everything under the sun.
For the gamers amongst us, whether Indie or mainstream, Comic-con has player competitions, alpha demos, exclusive trailers as well as opportunities to just sit back play some nostalgic titles with friends. That’s assuming you’re able to drag yourselves away from all the bleeding edge consoles and new wave VR games available to play. For those who prefer things a little lower tech, Oz comic-Con has you covered as well, with the latest tabletop games making their debut alongside a huge collection of card based, turn based and role playing games to keep you, your friends, and your family entertained for hours. For the movie buffs there were panels and exhibitions, exclusive trailers a huge collection of new and vintage films to see screenings of, purchase copies of, or just chat about with the people that helped make them. This goes double for fans of the silver screen. From Scifi, to rom-com, fantasy and horror, if it has captured an audience in recent memory, it probably has a representative at Comic-Con. This goes for both western and eastern titles, with both anime and manga having a strong presence throughout the convention. Whether you are looking to gift a classic series to an uninitiated friend, or catch up on the latest series unavailable for streaming, or even just to increase your figurine collection, Comic-Con stands as every weebs one-stop-shop.
Which leads us the titular topic, comics. If you are, no anyone who is, or have even been a fan of comics, Comic-Con is THE place to be. Not only does it boast a ridiculous library of titles for purchase, including, vintage, out of print, and special editions, but it also has a massive line up of some of the industries biggest names present to sign and chat about their work as well as the industry in general. From Stewart McKenny to Tom Taylor, Thomas Campi and many, many more.
But if all that wasn’t enough for you, if the chance to meet and greet some of the industries biggest names and explore that depths of their work with likeminded people doesn’t suite you. If you have no interest in the works of D.B Woodside and Ricky Whittle and even WWEs own Carmella, then fear not, there is still more for you to enjoy. Because Comic-Con is not just a spectator event, audience participation is encouraged. To the point where even the most cynical of critics would be hard pressed to find a bigger or better collection of the some the best cosplay and costume designs in Australia. Whether you yourself are a hobbyist and are interested in creating a photorealistic representation of the characters you love, or if you just want to see them come to life and share a drink with your on-screen crush; you won’t get a better chance than Comic-Con.
TL;DR If you love any part of pop culture and want to celebrate it with fellow fans, or if you just want to pick up some exclusive merch, OR if all you want to do is the spend a day meeting celebrities and admiring some the of the greatest artwork commercially available, visit Comic-Con. Basically, just go to Comic-Con, there is will be SOMETHING you love.
