West Beach Bathers Pavilion Review
West Beach Bathers Pavilion opened its doors to the thirsty public, hosting an eclectic range of wine, beer & cider producers and importers. With the sun setting, beach patrons enjoyed tasting the diverse range and chatting with some of the colourful characters that represent the breweries and vineyards while snacking on a never-ending flow of canapes from the kitchen. This beautifully restored 1920’s building provided a relaxing setting for after work drinks and having a good time.
One of the most entertaining characters of the night represented Dalz Otto, enjoying some wine and a good laugh with his visitors and neighbours. Patrons buzzed between the various tables, tasting wines, beers and special brews while discovering some of the character behind the product’s creation and motivations of the owners. The late afternoon sun on the deck offered a relaxing place to sit, drink and watch kite surfers making the most of a windy afternoon. The forecast weather conditions meant the crowd was less than expected, but those that attended seemed to get a more personalized service.
Many of the vendors added their own twist on the traditional processes to separate themselves from others on the market, from unusual colours to interesting ingredients. Colourful displays of beer, flavoured beers with Hawaiian lei’s, enormous bottles of AIX and intricacy shaped Vodka made for a visual taste treat as well.
Wineries, distilleries and breweries represented included:
Dalz Otto from King Valley, where ‘each wine is the blend of three elements - family, tradition and innovation - with one overarching philosophy- your origins are just as important as your future.’
Craggy Range, a New Zealand winery started by Terry & Mary Peabody in 1993 in Gimblett Gravels Winegrowing district, an ancient river bed of the Ngaruroro River in Hawke’s Bay and Te Muna Road, Martinborough.
Yabby Lake Vineyard which was established by the Kirby family in 1998, in Tuerong and is in the northern part of the Mornington peninsula. Over the past decade, the vineyard has built a reputation for single vineyard chardonnay and pinot noir of great purity and character. Led by winemaker Tom Carson, their philosophy is to craft wines that speak of the site and the season in which they were grown. It’s the attention and care in the vineyard that is most critical to allowing this expression.
La La Land offers an eclectic collection of new generation wines crafted from family owned estate that was established in 2013 near Mildura. Their wines are created with grape varieties slightly different to the norm and very well suited to the warm climate of north west Victoria. It is the official wine for the Jazz High Teas series at the Arts Centre Melbourne.
Shaw + Smith own two vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, at Balhannah and Lenswood, totalling 55 hectares. The vineyards are planted to varieties that perform particularly well in the region, namely Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. Site selection is particularly important in the Adelaide Hills, with its diversity of altitude, aspect, microclimate, and soil. We also use several different cultivars or ‘clones’ of each grape variety, which contribute different qualities to the final product.
Beverage Hills, a family owned business was established in 2016 and they import and distribute in Australia a range of premium beverages from the foothills of the Himalayas, Deccan Plateau and Nashik Valley in India.
Noisy Ritual, established in 2014 by Cam under his house, offers an opportunity to join the fun and make wine in East Brunswick. Join Alex and Cam to Stomp, Press & Bottle their 2018 vintage which kicks off Feb 2018.
AIX from Maison Saint Aix, situated just north of Aix-En Provence, France where the Rosé wine was born. That fact inspired AIX to produce an award winning top class Rosé with a bright, pale-pink colour and a delicate balance of crisp acidity and soft, ripe summer fruit
Studley Park Vineyard, owned by Geoff and Claire Pyror, is one acre of cabernet sauvignon planted in 1994 on the banks of the Yarra River at Kew. It turns the clock back to vineyards long since gone that were planted in many locations in the Melbourne metropolitan area in the mid-19th century.
Sofi Spritz makes the most of premium quality Australian wine and locally sourced ingredients. After initial taste testing at the Bondi Farmers markets in Sydney, they were crowdfunded and crowdsourced all the way to primetime with an appearance on Shark Tank Australia. it is an all-Australian wine cocktail inspired by the Italian-style of aperitivo, balanced with sparkling water, citrus & herbal extracts.
Sassy is a “Gluten-free, 100 % natural, the least calorific alcoholic drink” crafted by friends of 20 years Pierre-Emmanuel and Xavier who grew up together in Normandy. They had the ambition to modernize the first alcoholic beverage consumed by any young Normand that respect themselves: the cidre. Helped by a cellar master with a well-known expertise, Pierre-Emmanuel and Xavier have been developing their project for more than one
year and their work resulted in the launch of Sassy, the first contemporary cider brand “Made in Normandy”
Anestasia Vodka is an award-winning ultra-premium American vodka with the Spirit of American Luxury. Handcrafted in Bend, Oregon, it begins with our all natural grains, using only the finest batch from each harvest. The snow-capped Cascade Mountains provide one of the world’s purest water sources. As water flows down through lava bed rivers, it gains essential minerals and is naturally purified. Distilled 5x and filtered 5x through Quartz Crystal, AnestasiA Vodka™ is delightfully smooth, delicious, and naturally gluten-free. Female vodka maker Yuliya Mamontova creates an unprecedented quality product using a secret formula passed down to her by her Ukrainian grandmother.
Melbourne Moonshine captures the true spirit of the American South. This authentic and unique drop is borne from bespoke copper stills, now fired right here in our own South, South Melbourne. Making liquor for the love of it, charring barrels for the fun of it and blending botanical bitters for the taste of it, Malting, Distilling and Bottling, it’s all done in house. Direct flame fired stills, just like in the days of old, merge the traditions of the mountains with modern day Melbourne, results in a high-quality liquor that honours yesterday and suits the tastes of today’s sophisticated drinker.
Stone & Wood, established in 2008, is a handcrafted beer from Byron Bay in the Northern Rivers region of NSW. Brad, Jamie and Ross have spent many years working in the beer business with a dream to quit ‘working for the man’, shed the corporate garbage and get back to basics. They built the first brewery at the eastern tip of Australia to appeal to a part of the world where people enjoy having a beer when relaxing after catching a wave, catching a band at the pub or just catching up with friends. Now with a second brewery in Murwillumbah they endeavour to meet the growing demand for their beer.
Quiet Deeds, established in 2012 by childhood friends Patrick Ale & David Milstein who always had a dream of owning their own brewery. After a long slog of hand unloading containers themselves and paying for beer on their credit cards they got great success with their imported portfolio which enabled them to be able to re-invest in their own brewery. The meaning behind the Quiet Deeds name is all about sharing a beer with mates, Pat and Dave love nothing more than shouting a mate a beer, especially one they’ve made themselves.
Moon Dog was established in 2010 by brothers Josh and Jake Uljans and mate Karl van Buuren, the brewery turned heads with its very first batch. Having successfully experimented with outlandish ingredients such as watermelon, truffle, chilli, pumpkin and wild yeast they have continued to grow their success. Moon Dog's founders have just as much character as their products. A "secret" bookcase door connects the bar with a newer wing of the brewery, while the walls are adorned with such oddities as a framed photo of John Candy. The bar is free-spirited and anything going establishment set in a seedy street in Abbotsford's industrial quarter.
Hawkers was founded in 2014, and launched in February 2015, but has its roots much earlier. Mazen Hajjar, the founder, started the Middle East’s first craft brewery back during the July 2006 war between Israel and Hizbollah. By the time he left, his old company was exporting beer to 26 different countries including Australia. The name Hawkers is inspired from the street vendors, that roamed Australia from the early days of the colony. They have an unconditional commitment to spreading flavourful beer.
Kona Brewing Company was started by father and son team Cameron Healy and Spoon Khalsa who had a dream to create fresh, local island brews made with spirit, passion and quality. Their love of Hawaii, and a desire to protect the pristine environment here, brought them to the Big Island to fulfil their vision. Kona Brewing continues to be headquartered right where it began, in Kailua-Kona on Hawaii's Big Island. They introduced Big Wave Golden Ale and Fire Rock Pale Ale to Hawaii in bottles and kegs on February 14, 1995. These range in colour from very blonde to black; in flavour from tangy to hoppy to roasty… and everything in between. The Aloha Series, made up of Koko Brown, Lemongrass Luau and Pipeline Porter, is distributed throughout the United States as well.
8bit India Pale Ale, from Stockdale Brewing Company, is based in Smeaton Grange, around 60 kilometres southwest of Sydney, Stockade Brew Co is the hero label for Brewpack’s Szpitalaks family and first hit shelves around NSW in late 2015. The hop profile is a magnificent blend of traditional US hops Cascade and Citra with some Aussie Galaxy in there to add a tropical hit to the West Coast piney goodness.
Gage Roads is the strip of ocean that separates Rottnest Island and Fremantle in Western Australia. It’s a home to surfers and swimmers; seagulls and sharks; ships and sailors. It’s a place where you can relax, escape, explore, or seek out adventure. They saw a lot of themselves in that little spot. That’s why they named their brewery after it. They set up shop in an old margarine factory just outside Freo over 14 years ago and have been crafting beer there ever since. They make a range of ales and lagers, all of which are inspired by the place here on the WA coast
