THE HOUSE OF DIOR EXHIBITION
by Dina Gavrilova
February 12, 1947 in Paris on avenue Montaigne barely known designer Christian Dior launched his first collection. Thus, the famous style New Look was born to make a revolution in the fashion world and to turn couture house Christian Dior into the legend.
In commemoration of this event the National Gallery of Victoria presents the exhibition The House of Dior: Seventy Years of Haute Couture.
The name of Christian Dior is firmly associated with the femininity of the silhouette, elegance and sophisticated sense of balance. The exhibition allows to appreciate this in full by recreating the atmosphere of love for beauty and aura of luxury.
The very first hall embraces a visitor by French chic and forces to forget about the whole world, forwarding one to the kingdom of a fairy tale. Unable to escape, one reverentially follows through the halls, feeling like a Cinderella at the ball. Garments take turns in front of the eyes, breath is intercepted by the beauty and … suddenly… the iconic staircase is beheld. Almost that one from avenue Montaigne!
And further - the walk of fame! Stunning haute couture pieces of different years. Trying them on in mind, the visitor passes by feeling a bit as a Parisian. Once one assumes nothing could be more impressive, exquisite palette hat emerges within an eyeshot. In the mist of happiness passing through the arch, Dior's magic conquers all the visitor’s attention with dresses swirling in the dance and reflecting in mirrors as well as iridescent glare on the walls echoing them. Here it is, the embodiment of pure beauty and the fairy tale, which every woman desires to visit!
