INTERVIEW WITH ANGUS H LITTLE

interview by Susan Reynolds
SR: Is it possible do you think in some individuals to teach them rhythm when they don’t appear to have much grasp?
I watched in an interview with Nigel Clarke that he says rhythm runs through us the veins and heart. Is it perhaps like singing where some people practice and practice and can really be good after starting with a basic ability?
AL: Stomp is about finding rhythms everywhere. In everything. We all hear rhythms in everyday life, whether it be in the heart beat, the trains click clacking on the tracks, Birdsong, Extractor fans, The blind signal at the traffic lights. Rhythm is everywhere. Whether you are able to make beats like we do in the show is kind of beside the point. Even those who aren't the most "Musical" of folk appreciate Stomp because it's tuning into the rhythms that surround us everyday. Rhythm runs through everyone vains whether we can do a paradiddle or not.
SR. How much are you aware of The corroboree [NM: an Australian Aboriginal dance ceremony which may take the form of a sacred ritual or an informal gathering. ] indigenous music and rhythms?
AL: I haven't experienced a Corroboree First hand but I was brought up by very progressive and open parents. I had a didgeridoo and rhythm sticks when I was very young. My father was in a film called "Short Changed" which was all about how badly the Aboriginals in Australia have been treated for hundreds of years and still are. I'm pretty sure I have aboriginal blood but finding out isn't so easy. I hope I do. I can't be all convict.
SR. Is there a city which many of your members want to perform?
AL We are an international cast. We are all from different countries and walks of life. We are a mish mash of folk in this show so I can't talk for everyone. Myself... I would love to perform in Thailand...
SR. There are suggestions for creative changes constantly evolving in the show are there ever any disagreements at times surrounding the implementation of them?
AL: As a cast member, I don't write the routines.. We learn them and bring them to life. The routines are composed by Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicolas. They come up with these nutty ideas and we have to make them sit and work. Disagreements happen sometimes once a routine is in... But... Who cares? The routines are amazing.

STOMP REVIEW
by Susan Reynolds
“Stomp”
Comedy Theatre Melbourne
9/10
Review by Susan Reynolds
Within all of us lies this primeval desire to make or respond to rhythms.
The entertainers from the show “Stomp” employ everyday objects to create rhythmic sounds that resonate and appeal to audiences of all ages.
It’s a tribute to the common man; there’s a shopper with a heavy-laden cart, a kitchen hand with his sink and a cleaner all elevated to superstar level.
Raw, genuine, passionate, noisy, loud, quiet, funny, energetic, surprising, memorable, familiar, unfamiliar, quirky; all mix to build a riveting spectacular.
There’s no formal wear here; vests, work clothes, work boots make us feel comfortable and instills a seemingly effortless casualness. We could be fooled into thinking it’s not so difficult though we know this is not true. Be prepared to embrace some wacky unexpected and sometimes slapstick fun.
All is timed perfectly and with the troop’s finely honed skills they increasingly bring the audience into the performance. By the end everyone feels that they can really do this. With a short burst of lessons from pros we’re all getting the knack of the sequencing clapping and proudly joining in as Apprentice Stompers.
