Melbourne Dog Lovers Show 2018
I am not sure why I was surprised at the volume of people who passed through the magnificent pavilion that is the Royal Exhibition Building on the weekend. After all, who doesn’t love dogs?
The Melbourne Dog Lovers Show once again provided everything our fur babies could want or need. The two biggest areas catered to were food and fashion. There seemed to be an emphasis on organic and natural food and no matter how fussy an eater your pampered pooch is you could have found something yummy.
I will tell you about the retail options later though as I don’t want to give the impression that this was just a huge trade show where people were selling stuff. It was way more than that.
The theme for the year seemed to be about keeping dogs active and The Common Woof Games and BlackHawk DockDogs pool featured Australia’s most talented sporting canines. Some of the feats were mind blowing and you could have spent hours watching a huge variety of very clever dogs. There were several stages where experts, including television’s Dr Harry, shared their wisdom about everything to do with dogs. There was even an Insta-Pooch stage where you could see the latest Instagram stars.
The upstairs area was where you got to get up close and personal with all the different breeds. While there was a designated patting area downstairs, the individual breeds had booths upstairs where you could speak to owners and their dogs. I was a bit disappointed that the West Highland people were not there this year, but I am a little biased. There were plenty breeds who were there including the Westie’s relatives, the Scottie and the Collie. Seriously, I had forgotten how many dog breeds there are and how huge some of them are.
Plenty of advice was available from a number of Vets who were there, and I got a useful guide to the holiday accommodation places that welcome our four-legged friends. This is important as more of us want to be able to travel and we can’t always leave or pets behind. Medibank and Petplan were there to promote insurance for pets and RainbowPaws offer a lovely ecofriendly memorial service for pets who have passed.
Without doubt the best, and at the same time, saddest aspect of the show were the number of pet rescue services. Some were according to breed and others according to location. I counted thirty-two different organisations including one amazing group Pets of The Homeless Australia who help look after the pets of people who have nowhere to live. These amazing and dedicated volunteers work tirelessly to take care of beautiful animals that are discarded because the people who bought them did not do their homework. You may want to see whether the Irish Wolfhound, that is going to grow to the size of a pony, really suits your lifestyle and space.
As one of the ladies said to me, their greatest wish is that they will become unnecessary.
So, onto the retail.
The major fashion items were bandanas in a glorious range of patterns and colours and soft fluffy coats that felt very much like pyjamas. I was tempted to buy one of those quilted puffy jackets for Nero, only because my son finds them such an objectionable item of clothing. In the end I didn’t buy any of the fashion items because there were so many to choose from that I couldn’t make up my mind.
Of course, there were lots of toys and treats and items to keep your dog healthy and active, but the four products that stood out for me were the bubbling water bowl, the microchip activated food bowl, the automatic ball shooting thingy and the sprays for removing odour and stains from furniture and carpet. I had seen the device for shooting the ball out for your dog to chase before and thought it was the brilliant as it could stop Nero from bouncing his ball at my feet when I am trying to work. The odour remover is a no brainer. Apparently, it has an enzyme that eats the bacteria and turns it to dust. No matter how long it has been there. The other two items were new to me.
I discovered only recently that cats prefer to drink from moving water and so the water bowls that were like indoor fountains made sense. However the winner was definitely the SUREFEED covered food bowl. I am sure we are not the only people who have to feed the cats somewhere that the dog can’t get at their food. For us it is the top of the washing machine and this is getting awkward as the cat ages. This ingenious feeding contraption consists of a covered dish inside a frame. As the cat goes through the arch it triggers the mechanism and the lid retracts. When kitty leaves the lid closes again. As it is programmed to a specific animal the food is protected from other pets. I am not sure it would stand up to the determined efforts of massive German Shepherds or Irish Wolfhounds I saw but it would certainly keep our naughty Westie out.
I love the Royal Exhibition building, it is so beautiful, but it was really uncomfortable with so many people. The lines for some of the activities were incredibly long and there were bottlenecks at several spots. I think next year I will go on the Friday when maybe it will be a little less busy. I would certainly go again though because it was amazing.
