Banjos, Boots & Beyoncé (BBB)
by St Martins Youth Arts Centre
Our night spent with Banjos, Boots & Beyoncé was a blast! I have not had so much fun in a long time. And who made it happen? The wonderful collective of St Martins Youth Arts Centre!
St Martins is one of Australia’s leading companies working with children and giving them the opportunity to become equal owners of the creative process. They produce bold and disruptive theatre performances made with young children and teenagers for adult audiences, that encourage the society to create space for young people’s opinions to be heard. This production was no exception. With children taking reign over the stage and the dance floor, it was a celebration of youth power and vibrant energy.
Directed by award-winning Luke Kerridge with the assistance of Dale Thorburn, BBB is the modern reimagining of the traditional bush dancing which is still taught at schools of Australia. The work investigates the concepts and relevance of social dance and invites to hook up hands with strangers in merry do-si-dos.
The performing ensemble was comprised from kids who participated in St Martins’ workshops in South Yarra, Northcote and St Albans, and choreographed by Ghenoa Gela, who is a proud Torres Strait Islander woman from Rockhampton. Children loved to be dressed in the cool costumes created by the designer Romanie Harper.
It was a perfect opportunity to shake it off by the beats put together by the awesome DJ MzRizk. The audience was invited to participate in the dancing routines that set the floor on fire. Led by children from St Martins, adults had the chance to recollect something from their past and learn some new steps and turns of contemporary dancing. The large hall of Substation in Newport was full of happy faces, and since the children were in charge, this event put unforgettable enthusiastic sparkles in their eyes. And in the end, even the wallflowers were given the opportunity to join in the riotous razzle-dazzle and express themselves with some Macarena and YMCA.

St Martin's Youth Arts Centre: Banjos, Boots and Beyonce at Substation Newport
Interview with director: Luke Kerridge
Children all around Australia learn to bush dance every year. You did, I did, we all did. So what’s the deal with a bush dance? What does it mean today? And will we still be Krumping in a hundred years’ time?
Take your partner by the hand as ST MARTINS throws the rule book away. Kids call the shots in this riotous night of dance, banter and iced vovos. This is not your average bush dance, this is a contemporary reimagining through the lens of ST MARTINS’ young artists.

Choreographer: Ghenoa Gela
Designer: Romanie Harper
Sound/DJ: Mz Rizk
Lighting Designer: Lucy Birkinshaw
