Rest in Pieces 'Butterflies and Bubbles' workshop review:
I initially came to this entomology and specimen preparation lesson to help overcome my irrational fear of insects.
I was also very curious: in our fast paced age, taxidermy seems to be so old-fashioned and outdated and politically incorrect.
My concerns were completely unfounded:
- It is completely cruelty free: all specimens are obtained from specialized farms, and died from accidental or natural death. For example, the butterflies for our workshop came from the American butterfly preservation plantation.
- Perfectly environmentally friendly – all chemicals used are the non-harmful household variety.
- It was a lot of fun!
I didn't expect to enjoy it so much! It was a unique experience, wonderfully artistic, and very educational, in an entertaining and relaxed way.
The workshop is set up at the picturesque Fairfield Park Boathouse & Tea Gardens, which is a truly worthwhile place to visit by itself. We had an optional tea or coffee and were introduced to our instructor and his assistant.
Jason Penfold conducted the workshop, and is an art teacher and artist by trade. His interest and knowledge in entomology led to the opening of this particular workshop two years ago. He is a helpful instructor, spicing up logical step-by-step instructions and scientific facts (anatomy and life cycle of butterflies) with whimsical terminology and funny stories.
We were provided with delicious light lunch, tea & coffee, and as the name suggests, bubbly.
Rest in Pieces is the brainchild of Natalie Delaney-John, a young lady who is passionate and wonderfully articulate about her choices. She traveled the world following her interest of ‘lost arts’. A few years ago she started in Australia with a single taxidermy workshop, which has now expanded into the Skeletal Articulation and Butterfly entomology classes.
Please see her full interview here ( link ?)
There are more workshops in the making, going wider and deeper. Natalie wants all her students to understand that there is nothing scary or gory about taxidermy, and that it can be presented positively and in a safe and clean environment. Her carefully composed lessons combine science and art, as well as theory and hands on practice and craft.
The next step is to open a permanent school where all this and much more can be taught to kids and adults. I can see that it can be really successful as Natalie already has 30 enthusiastic volunteers helping her. Some of her students return for a second time – which is always a positive sign.
By the end of the day I have learned several preparation techniques, a few interesting facts about butterflies and moths, and took home beautiful specimens that I prepared myself. The star of my collection was a magnificent huge black and turquoise Ulysses butterfly. However participants could choose a wonderfully decadent Death Moth instead. I also got to take home a shadow box to mount and display it in.
I am still uncomfortable with insects, but after attending this workshop I think I can appreciate the diversity of nature much more and I absolutely love my display box.
My verdict is: if you want to get away from plastic-fantastic and high tech, to be able to see and feel the fragility and beauty of nature, you will love Rest in Pieces workshop. It is truly an enjoyable and captivating event.
