Introduction. There is no better way to start waking up from a winter chilling winds and harsh weather but with the fresh aroma and colorful views of sensational spring flowers... When it comes to spring and flowers there is no one doing it better than Tesselaar Tulip Festival that is exhibiting the tender flowers display in the most remarkable way. Located close to Dandenong Ranges in Silvan the Tesselaar tulips show is a real visual symphony with all its new sensations only spring can create inside our souls.
Tesselaar started growing tulips in 1943 and the festival began in 1954. The 2014 Tulip Festival will run from 11th September to 7th Octoberinviting visitors of any age to be part of this celebration. The Festival also offers the theme weekends: Turkish, Irish, Dutch and Food/Wine and Jazz, along with Seniors and Children's weeks too. There is an annual aquisitional sculpture award at the farm including works from renown Australian sculptors, visitors are also encourage to pick their favourites with the People's Choice Award. Although there is only one week of the Festival left there is still a lot to see and explore. I was especially excited when I got a chance to speak with media contact Wendy Barnes who kindly agreed to find some time in her busy schedule to answer my questions. Tesselaar Direct is a company I personally highly regard, a company that values beauty, art, nature and harmony so dear to our Club readers and followers - in what they do and how they oragnise their major event of the year:
Q1. Hi Wendy, and thank you for this beautiful opportunity. Busy as a loving flowers bee do you find it exciting working in such a gorgeous environment?
WB:There is a saying that if you love what you do, it is not work. That’s how I feel, lucky, blessed and I do enjoy being part of such a lovely environment, and the view in spring is simply stunning! Many people know of the Tulip Festival but not everyone knows our core business is our mail order nursery which runs year round. We have a range of free seasonal catalogues that include a wide variety of bulbs and perennials which we send all over Australia. Our farm shop “Habitat at Tesselaar” stocks products available from each catalogue while it is running along with giftware, so people are welcome to visit our historic gardens even when the tulip festival is not on. Visit www.tesselaar.net.au if you wish to receive a free mail order catalogue.
Q2. How many tulips do you have blooming this year on the show?
WB: There are over 500,000 Tulips in bloom throughout the festival. We plant early, mid and late flowering varieties to ensure a four week display.
Q3. How many tulip varieties do you have this year on display?
WB: Planted throughout the grounds including the fields and the front display garden there are over 100 different varieties.

Q4. What impresses you the most about this year exhibition?
WB:The combination of colours. Our farmers spend a lot of time selecting the most impressive varieties. Then choosing the combinations in which to plant the colours. Combining the yellows, purples and reds really makes a big impact. With so many Tulips you think they may become mundane, but taking a moment every day to admire their beauty leaves a lasting impression.
Q5. What is your favorite tulip color/variety?
WB: My personal favourite is “World’s Favourite”, a big bright gorgeous Orange bloom with a golden trim. It is an early variety and was one of the first to flower this season. The flowers almost glow.
Q6. What do you find challenging in this year festival?
WB: The majority of people are out and about on weekends especially when the weather is lovely, so a big challenge is trying to increase and encourage weekday traffic.

Q7. How many people have already visited this year display?
WB: We have not calculated numbers as yet for this year but we generally see over 50,000 visitors through the gate over the four week period.
Q8. What was your most memorable day at the festival of tulips so far?
WB: From a work point we’ve had a lot of Media interest this year, we had Postcards film a segment with Brodie Harper which aired last week and we saw ABC News Breakfast with Vanessa O’Hanlon’s weather cross plus we always spot a few celebrities during the festival. On a personal note I bought my 2 kids ‘my test pilots” in during school holidays as they had been waiting all year to see the ever entertaining MikMaks (kids band) and of course enjoy all the activities on offer (& they did).
Q9. When we say "Dutch" we usually start thinking about the tulips, yummy pancakes, clogs (Dutch wooden shoes) and windmills. What do you find the most remarkable about the Dutch culture?
WB: I still can’t believe they can dance in clogs! I thought it could be beneficial for me working here to learn the language. Someone recently told me it’s one of the hardest languages to learn.

Q10. Year after year the festival is getting bigger and bigger and it adds more and more activities in its schedule. What do you plan for the next year in terms of festival additional activities?
WB: At the end of each festival we look at what worked, what didn’t, what might need reviewing and also read through our visitor questionnaires to see what people would like and expect to see etc and try and work toward the impossible…pleasing everybody!
Q11. Can you please describe the festival in three words?
WB: Unique, timeless, beautiful
Q12. What do you like about the Tesselaar Tulip Festival the most?
WB: Maybe not the ‘most’ but I do love not having to make my lunch every day for four weeks. My scales however like that not so much.

Q13. From your opinion: what would make the Festival even more successful?
WB: I’ve always thought it would be great if it could only rain at night…
Q14. What will you wish to all the visitors that will be attending in the next week of the Festival?
WB: I wish the same thing from beginning to end, for decent weather. It’s the one thing we can’t control but I always feel for people who have booked a bus trip in advance and end up with a rainy day. Although if you have a coat, umbrella and appropriate footwear you would be surprised how many people still get out and enjoy themselves.
I also wish for everyone to enjoy the Tulips as much as we do.
Very grateful for your answers, Wendy!
