INTERVIEW WITH ARTIST TRACIE EATON
How many events and auctions do you organise in a year in Australia for your art buyers and are there plans for future international events?
This does vary. I usually have one or two solo exhibitions annually. This depends in part on the number of commissions I have booked at any one time. Additionally, I am involved in 2 – 3 group exhibitions or live art performances, including body art & costuming every quarter. It can certainly be a very busy life but this busy-ness is one that I thrive on as I get to create pretty much every day.
Regarding future international events – absolutely there are plans. We are bringing my Oscars Collection event & auction to Los Angeles in 2024, we are in discussions currently with galleries in New York, Miami and LA, along with Dubai and Asia. We are actively engaging ongoing representation in these areas, which means we will have the opportunity to exhibit in all these locations. Very exciting times ahead!
You not only paint but also create body art and wearable art, please give us some insights to what inspires you when you create these?
I absolutely adore creating in 3D, as creating a gown requires. Fashion is cool, and whilst I have no plans to be a fashion designer, I do love the idea of really integrating visual arts into wearable fashion. In my mind I am creating a ‘living sculpture’. Something that is completely unique and helps the wearer to feel beautiful, feminine, sexy and completely empowered.

I use all the materials I usually use in my paintings, and, as with my standard artworks, nature & abstract form do play a part in what I create. It is a lot of fun.
What are the plans for the future of your brand ?
Whilst I live on the Gold Coast, Australia I have been selling internationally for approximately 13 years. Covid did see a significant change in my business, so the future for me is to continue to raise the profile of the brand internationally. This is where I see much of my business coming from in the future. I provide exclusive and personal experiences to all who purchase my artwork. I am involved in All aspects of the art, from making the canvas to installing the work. This level of exclusivity is important to me, and my clients. I paint moments, and I want to ensure that the moments my clients experience throughout working with me to create for them are very memorable, no matter where they are in the world.
When you are not painting, what do you like to do?
Well, here is a quick story for you. I was madly working away on a commission of 42 originals for a hotel here on the Gold Coast a few years back. My husband, and close friends were telling me I needed to take a day off as I had been painting every day for about 4 months at that stage. I resisted this but begrudgingly took a day.
As my husband closed the front door to leave for the day, I sat on the couch and thought to myself “what on earth am I going to do today?” immediately and excitedly, the first thought that came to me was “oh, I think I might paint today!” I laughed at myself but did realise at that moment I was absolutely following my true path.
So, in answer to your question, there are few days that I do not think about painting or am painting or creating in some form. When I am not, I love walks on the beach, lying in the sun, reading and hanging out with my hubby and my gorgeous puppy. I love and live a simple life. It gives space for me to see the fabulousness around us, to feel inspired every day, & to allow my creativity to flourish.
How did you become an award winning internationally acclaimed Australian contemporary artist?
This was actually a very organic process for me. I received my first award in 2018, and was asked to contribute to international curated emerging artist awards and publications in 2019. I certainly received further attention when I became public that I was gifting to Hollywood celebrities to celebrate their Oscar nomination, which I continue to do now. I love being involved in celebrating success.
In the last 2 years I have won multiple awards both nationally and internationally including the Leonardo Da Vinci Award (Florence, Italy), the top 25 global contemporary artists of 2021, the most creative art company (Australia) 2023 and recently, the best acrylic artist 2023 (Asia-Pacific). It is particularly humbling as many awards I am nominated by someone else, which really is fabulously rewarding to me.
When did you start immersing yourself in art ?

When did you start immersing yourself in art ?
I began painting about 16 years ago, however I have always been very creative. I studied photography in school, along with art therapy and colour psychology during my time as an Occupational Therapist. It was during this time that my passion for colour, and its subconscious impact, really came to the fore. I continue to be amazed and inspired by the joy, beauty & often change that art brings to people’s lives. Painting is an incredible process for both myself and my clients. Art transcends culture, age and beliefs, and is so incredibly heartfelt that I do believe you have to be ready to be an artist – even though it may always be waiting there for you. It took me a while to be ready – to embrace all that being an artist encompasses. And I have never looked back.
When you paint, what are all the elements that inspire you?
This is such an interesting question. I am inspired by everyday things & everyday moments. So much so that I see each artwork I create as a depiction of a moment, and one that can never be repeated. This is why I specialise in producing one off pieces. I particularly love nature as it is forever changing. I could be taking my dog for a walk and the light creates a soft glow on everything I see. It could be a particularly stormy evening and the contrast and rugged energy of the sky dominates everything. It could be a feeling, a moment, a chance engagement with someone. Everyday life gets interpreted onto canvas for me. That is why I love painting in a more loose, abstract and interpretive fashion. At the end of the day, I am inspired by so many things, but the painting knows where it needs to head. So once I start, I choose my colours or style, I let things go and it takes care of itself. I think this also inspires me as I truly feel I am the conduit to bringing something to life. And if it is a commission, I am bringing my clients' vision to life. So cool!
What colours are your favourite to use in your artwork?
I absolutely have no favourite colour. The colours of preference change based on how I am feeling, what mood I want the painting to portray, or what I see. Living in a coastal region, with fabulous blue skies I do tend to use a lot of blue-green hues (aqua, turquoise) along with complementary colours such as indigo, corals, pinks, charcoal.I am also a bit partial to a bit of sparkly so it is likely most of my artwork will have either resin, Swarovski crystal, glitters, pigment powers or metallic foils somewhere in them too.
As an artist how do you balance your creative work and your business?
Ah, most certainly an eternal challenge. I have been fortunate in my life to hold professional roles that required me to learn, understand and implement systems, processes, sales and marketing. All very much learned behaviors. However, my genius, the thing that comes naturally to me is creating. So, the key for me to balance the need for me to paint both personally & professionally), along with sourcing new opportunities, planning for future, is to structure my time. I really do need to give myself permission to immerse myself in business, and then in painting. This does become a challenge when I feel particularly inspired, or am working to a deadline, but it is the only way that I can give airtime to both aspects of what is required to paint as a business..
You are a known philanthropist in the art industry in Australia, could you care to elaborate on your philanthropy work ?
I am a firm believer in giving back. The more well-known I become, the more influence for change I can make. I am an ambassador for the charity organisation ‘Destiny Rescue’. Their sole focus is to eradicate sex trafficking and exploitation of children. I came across them when a client purchased a painting from me, then gifted it to Destiny Rescue as an auction item. This intrigued and inspired me so I went along to the event, and immediately knew I needed to put my efforts into assisting this organisation. Consequently, 10% of everything we sell is gifted to them. Additionally, I do assist where needed, whether it be events, speaking, networking on their behalf, I am happy to donate my time.
Further to Destiny Rescue, I do select 2 additional causes every year that I donate paintings to for auction items, to assist in raising funds for them. There is so much good we can do in this world, we simply need to choose to, and I see no value in building success, if we do not then use this to advantage those who need a helping hand. I said earlier that I am motivated to bring beauty, joy and inspire change in others. And assisting charities I believe in, is another way to achieve this.
